Math professor to give lecture

LEWISBURG - Howard Smith, professor of mathematics at Bucknell University, will give the annual Class of 1956 Lecture at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, in the Gallery Theatre of the Elaine Langone Center at Bucknell.

The lecture, "A Mathematical Scrapbook," is free and open to the public.

Smith will present a general talk that will emphasize the central role that mathematics has played in human culture over the centuries.

Established by the Class of 1956 as a graduation gift to the University, the lectureship is awarded during Commencement ceremonies to a member of the faculty in recognition of inspirational teaching.

Smith joined the Bucknell faculty in 1988.
