MONTGOMERY - Six months ago, a new hair salon opened to cater to the whole family.
Audrey Earnest, owner and stylist, turned what used to be a barber shop into Audrey's Shear Vintage Hair Salon, 11 S. Main St.
"It's always been my dream to open my own shop," Earnest said.

Audrey Earnest, left, owner, opened Audrey’s Shear Vintage Hair Salon, 11 S. Main St., in Montgomery, with fellow stylist, Kathy Jo Bennett. They cut, perm and color hair. A tanning bed also is downstairs for customers.
Since her kids are grown, she figured it was her chance to do what she always wanted to do.
Earnest said the salon will cut men's, women's and kid's hair, while also styling perms, highlights and lowlights.
Downstairs, a tanning bed is set up with tropical decorations.

Earnest works with her niece Kathy Jo Bennett, who also styles hair, especially men's hair.
"We want to see it grow so we can get at least two more stylists," she said.
What separates the salon from others is the prices, Earnest said.
"We kept prices low because of the economy," she said. "We keep them fairly low compared to other places."
The best part of the job for Earnest is the interaction with customers and the control of being in charge.
"I like being around people," she said. "I like being able to set what day and hours I want to work."
Earnest said that she mostly handles women's haircuts and Bennett handles men's haircuts.
They also have their own styles.
"I'm old school," Earnest said. "She's new school."
Earnest said she likes working in Montgomery because the community is supportive and friendly.
"Montgomery seemed like more of a friendly town," she said. " People accepted us right away in Montgomery. They liked the friendliness of us. ... I like the small town atmosphere and the friendly one-on-one. I like to get to know my customers."
Some people still associate with the shop as a barber's shop, and Earnest said she has been trying to make people realize they can do the whole family's hair.
"Our main goal is to let people know we're here," she said.
Walk-ins are encouraged, but for chemical treatment such as hair colorings and perms, Earnest said they prefer appointments. For people who work when the shop is open, Earnest said they can accommodate with appointments before or after they're open.
Audrey's Shear Vintage Hair Salon is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
