Evangelical hospital offers

blood pressure screenings

Community Health Education at Evangelical Community Hospital will hold a series of free community blood pressure screenings on the following days:

9 a.m.-1 p.m. today at the Mifflinburg Bank and Trust, Lewisburg branch;

8-10 a.m. Jan. 10 at the Susquehanna Valley Mall, Selinsgrove. Blood sugar screenings also available.

At the Community Health Education Center, next to Staples on Route 15 in Lewisburg, on the following days - 9 a.m.-noon Mondays, noon-4 p.m. Wednesdays, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Fridays.

Prepare for childbirth

LEWISBURG - Evangelical Community Hospital will hold the following childbirth classes this month:

Hello Baby Class (for siblings ages 2-10) - Monday, 6:15-7:30 p.m., Apple Conference Room AB, behind the hospital's dining room.

Newborn Care - Jan. 10 and 17, 7-9 p.m., Community Health Education Center, next to Staples on Route 15.

Prepared Childbirth - Wednesdays, Jan. 4 to Feb. 1, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Community Health Education Center.

Prepared Childbirth Refresher - Call to schedule.

Prenatal Breastfeeding - Jan. 23, 7-9 p.m., Community Health Education Center.

Weekend Express - Jan. 7, 9-4 p.m., Community Health Education Center.

Grandparents Class - Jan. 18, 6-10 p.m., D&E Conference Room, across from the hospital's central registration.

Expectant Parents class

examines changes

WELLSBORO - A free Expectant Parents class titled "Physical and Emotional Changes During Pregnancy" will be held 7-8:30 p.m. Jan. 10 in the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital's board room.

The class is part of a cycle of classes addressing common questions and concerns of expectant parents, including labor and delivery, C-sections, breastfeeding and bottlefeeding, swaddling, physical/emotional changes and newborn needs.

Registration is not necessary; walk-ins are welcome. Participants may attend classes at any time in the cycle.

Nursing exam scheduled

TOWANDA - The practical nursing program at the Northern Tier Career Center, 120 Career Center Lane, will administer a pre-entrance exam at 8:15 a.m. Jan. 18 and Feb. 15.

Susquehanna Health announces healthy events

This month, Susquehanna Health will hold the following healthy events designed to provide health information and benefit the community:

Osteoporosis screening - A quick and painless ultrasound heel screening that measures bone density level will be held Monday at The LifeCenter in the Bon-Ton/JC Penney wing of the Lycoming Mall. Cost is $25. Call 1-877-883-4791 to schedule an appointment.

Free, Confidential STD and HIV Clinic - The state Department of Health and AIDS Resource will provide free, confidential sexually transmitted disease testing for chlamydia, gonorrhea and HIV from 5 to 7 p.m. Jan. 13 at The LifeCenter. No appointment is necessary. In case of inclement weather, the clinic will be rescheduled for Jan. 20.

AARP Driver Safety eight-hour refresher course - A two-day driver safety course for drivers over age 50 will be held from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 19 and 20 at The LifeCenter. The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Register in advance by calling the Lincoln Senior Center at 323-3096 from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Monday or Wednesday. Pre-payment required. Checks may be mailed to the Lincoln Senior Center, 2138 Lincoln St., Williamsport, PA 17701.

Is Your Thyroid Making You Fat - As part of Susquehanna Health's Spirit of Women program, endocrinologist Dr. Margrit Shoemaker will discuss the role of the thyroid gland in metabolism and weight gain at 6 p.m. Jan. 24 The LifeCenter. Free. Each participant will receive a free pedometer. Any woman who signs up at the event for membership in the free Spirit of Women program will receive a free T-shirt. Seating is limited. Old mercury thermometers may be disposed of and exchanged for new digital thermometers at The LifeCenter, weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
