WILKES-BARRE --- The F.M. Kirby Center is resolved to kick off the new year with a flurry of events.
Located in Public Square, The Kirby Center will offer a tribute concert, two comedians, a country-and-western solo show and a children's classic this month.
ABBA: ARRIVAL (7 p.m. Jan. 8) - The only ABBA tribute group originally from Sweden, ABBA: ARRIVAL formed in 1995 and has toured the world singing the hits of the all-time pop group, which has sold more than 370 million records worldwide. ABBA surged in popularity when its music was adapted in 1999 for "Mama Mia!," the stage musical and in 2008 for the movie version. The Kirby Center urges its fans to "Take A Chance" on ABBA: ARRIVAL.
JERRY SEINFELD (7 and 9:30 p.m. Jan 13) - One of the biggest nightclub attractions, Seinfeld brings his quirky standup comedy to the Kirby Center for two performances. Having been the first stand-in for Regis Philbin for two weeks earlier this month, Seinfeld now is in the midst of a nationwide tour.
DARIUS RUCKER (Jan. 20) - Gaining early fame as the former lead singer and rhythm guitarist for the rock band Hootie and the Blowfish, Rucker has made a dramatic change in his career.
His entry into the world of country music was marked with curiousity and intrigue based upon his history as a rock musician.
KATHLEEN MADIGAN (8 p.m. Jan. 27) --- A spirited Irish-American comedian, Madigan has piled up awards with her pointed viewpoints. Late night television appearances include "Late Night With David Letterman," "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "Late Night with Conan O'Brian," and an HBO special.
Her appearance at the Kirby Center will draw upon her radio show, "Blue Collar Comedy."
CHARLOTTE'S WEB (2 p.m. Jan. 28). A touring group will spin this children's classic for a matinee performance to wind up the Kirby Center's January lineup.
