Execution date set for man who killed 2 deputies

TOWANDA - Gov. Tom Corbett signed an execution warrant this week for Dustin Ford Briggs, 34, of Gillett, to die by lethal injection on March 8.

In 2006, Briggs was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to death for shooting Deputies Christopher Burgert and Michael VanKuren in March 2004.

Briggs shot the two deputies in his father's junkyard as they were attempting to serve a warrant on Briggs for nonpayment of fines, costs and restitution. according to court records.

After fleeing into a wooded area, Briggs was the subject of a massive manhunt until he was captured by state police.

He is being held at the State Correctional Institution at Greene.

The warrant is Corbett's 11th execution warrant.
