There’s a new (Sim)man in town

Williamsport Sun-Gazette

WELLSBORO - Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital has received a new simulator designed to improve communication and develop effective team performance.

SimMan Essential, or SimMan, is a realistic, full-body adult simulator with breath, heart and bowel sounds; blinking eyes; rising and falling chest; pulse; and speech. Using it, staff can train in endotracheal intubation, foley catheterization, defibrillation, IV cannulation, as well as airway, breathing, cardiac or circulation management.

SimMan was provided by the CHART Institute, a patient safety organization, that has launched a new, high-quality standardized simulation program. Soldiers and Sailors is a participating hospital in the initiative.

The simulator also will help build individual competence in clinical skills. Following each injury or illness scenario, debriefing and reflective sessions will allow participants to review and learn from behaviors, interventions, communication, and teamwork during the simulation session.
