Dining with Diabetes classes announced

Dining with Diabetes, a popular Penn State Extension program for adults with diabetes and their families, will be held at Lysock View Complex in Montoursville during the month of March. The classes offer healthy meal planning, cooking demonstrations and hands-on food preparation, class discussions and new physical activity choices.

Class discussions will include:

Important numbers you need to know;

Planning healthy meals for your lifestyle;

Fiber, carbohydrates, fats, sweeteners and practical uses;

Healthy food preparation your family will enjoy; and

Physical activity for all abilities.

Classes are offered weekly for four weeks, with a three-month follow-up class. Lab tests will be offered and participants will receive class handouts, test results, an exercise DVD, resistance band for exercising, Joslin Diabetes Center educational materials, completed collection of Dining with Diabetes recipes and Plate Method placemat.

Classes will be held at 2 p.m. March 1, 8, 22 and 29 on the second floor at Lysock View. An informational class will be held at 2 p.m. today at Lysock View. That meeting will allow participants to complete initial paperwork and ask questions about their expectations of the class.

The cost is $40 per individual or $55 for a family of two people. Scholarships are available, and many health insurers will reimburse the cost.

Learn about C-section delivery

WELLSBORO - Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital will hold a free Expectant Parents class titled "C-section Delivery & Breastfeeding" from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today.

Attendees will learn about breast feeding, bottle feeding, caesarean sections and recovery as well as the possible situations requiring a C-section. The class is part of a cycle of classes coordinated by registered nurse Stacey Tom, addressing various topics regarding pregnancy, birth and newborns.

Classes are not sequential, and participants may join at any time during the cycle. Registration is not necessary.

ACLS class planned

WELLSBORO - Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital will hold a one-day recertification Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) class for registered nurses, physicians and paramedics from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday in the hospital board room.

The ACLS Provider Course is designed to provide the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate and manage the first 10 minutes of an adult ventricular fibrillation/ventricular tachycardia arrest. The instructors will be Dr. Donald Shaw and Linda Patterson, registered nurse. Registration is required.

Childbirth class scheduled

A one-day childbirth class designed to increase the understanding of labor and reduce anxiety about giving birth will be held 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the Williamsport Regional Medical Center.

Fathers and partners will learn how to help moms-to-be get through labor with touch and words.

Participants also will learn about pain relief and tour The Birthplace.

Attendance is open to all expectant parents, but the fee is $40 per family.

Nursing exam set

TOWANDA - The practical nursing program at the Northern Tier Career Center, 120 Career Center Lane, will administer a pre-entrance exam at 8:15 a.m. March 21 and April 11.
