North Central Tobacco Control Coalition challenges communities to protect children’s lungs

March 13, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

Following the lead of Wellsboro Parks and Recreation, the Wellsboro Area School District committed to the Young Lungs at Play initiative.

The North Central Tobacco Control Coalition presented free signs to the district and used the occasion to call on all communities in the region to participate in its Young Lungs at Play Community Challenge.

To participate in the challenge, a township, borough or city needs to adopt a written tobacco-free ordinance or resolution that designates parks, playgrounds and athletic fields as tobacco-free.

The North Central Tobacco Control Coalition presented free signs to the Wellsboro Area School District, identifying it as a participant in the Young Lungs at Play initiative.

Other organizations such as day care centers, churches and youth recreation and sports organizations within the municipality then are recruited to adopt similar policies and can be recognized in the challenge.

The initiative protects children's health by creating safe, healthy and clean places for them to play.

"All children are at risk for asthma and other respiratory diseases when exposed to second hand smoke," said district Superintendent Chris Morral. "Plus, the new danger of even more smokeless tobacco and other nicotine delivery devices plagues our district's children."
