WELLSBORO - Cameron Surface Systems, of Laceyville, will hold a recruiting session for 200 positions March 22 at the local CareerLink office, representative Melissa Fleming told the Tioga County Development Corp. recently.
"They have told us they will be hiring about 200 people for an office here," she said, including flowback operators, field technicians and field service technicians.
CareerLink's Shalenet program, which conducts a four-week course for the commercial truck driver's license, will graduate six students this week, Fleming added.
CDL drivers are in short supply in Tioga County because of the natural gas industry.
Another industry in short supply of workers is the construction industry, and CareerLink has a course for that too.
"We are also starting a 'Fit for Building and Construction' course in the next few weeks for up to 15 people. It's a four-week course that teaches employability skills and technical skills and includes a networking session," Fleming said.
In other business, the board heard the following:
The annual legislative breakfast will be at 7:30 a.m. April 5 at the Penn Wells Hotel. Sen. Joseph B. Scarnati III, R-Brockway; U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson, R-Howard; and Thomas A. Marino, R-Cogan Station, have been invited, along with a representative from the governor's office.
Growth Resources of Wellsboro Secretary Mary Worthington reported that Shell Appalachia's activity at the airport has "increased dramatically." On the rail side of things, water tankers from Erwin and Painted Post, N.Y., are transporting water for the gas industry to the junction, and that will cause freight traffic to increase dramatically, she said.
Board Chairman David E. Cummings said the Everything Games store on North Main Street in Mansfield has closed and a florist shop that had been located south of town immediately took its place.
Jim Baker, of Larson Design and TerrAqua, said Lawrenceville Borough approved a conditional use to allow construction of a wastewater treatment facility to service the gas industry on River Road.
