Seminar on aging planned tonight
UNIVERSITY PARK - Bruce Ames, a prominent scientist in the fields of biochemistry, molecular biology and degenerative diseases, will present the first Healthy Lion Award Seminar, co-sponsored by Penn State's Center of Excellence for Plant and Mushroom Foods for Health and the Department of Food Science.
The seminar, which is open to the public, will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. today in Berg Auditorium, 100 Life Sciences Building, on the University Park campus.
During the seminar, titled "Vitamin and Mineral Inadequacy Accelerates Aging Associated Diseases," Ames will discuss his "triage theory," which helps explain the onset of degenerative diseases as a person ages.
The theory hypothesizes that human metabolism responds to moderate deficiency of an essential vitamin or mineral such that the scarce nutrient is preferentially retained by proteins necessary for short-term survival and reproduction. In contrast, proteins needed for long-term health - which Ames calls "longevity proteins" because they defend against the diseases associated with aging - lose the deficient vitamin or mineral and are disabled.
"Most of the world's people, including Americans, are moderately deficient in one or more of the roughly 30 essential vitamins and minerals," Ames said. "Since the damage from moderate deficiency is insidious, its importance for long-term health is underappreciated. Theory and evidence suggest that this metabolic trade-off accelerates aging-associated diseases, such as cancer, cognitive decline and cardiovascular disease."

PSA tests offered for prostate cancer
WELLSBORO - Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. The early stages often cause no symptoms and can go unnoticed. With early detection, most prostate cancer can be cured.
The most effective way of detecting prostate cancer is a combination of the prostate specific antigen test (blood test) and a digital rectal exam.
Laurel Health System will offer a PSA test from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and April 24 in the white Occupational Health building, 25 Walnut St. The sample will be tested by the clinical laboratory at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital.
Following the PSA test, an appointment will be scheduled with Dr. E. Lee Bellinger, urologist, for a digital rectal exam on either May 10 or May 11. The exam will be performed at Bellinger's office in Wellsboro, and the results of the PSA test will be provided to each participant at that time.
No appointment is necessary for the PSA test. The cost for both exams is $21, payable at the time of the PSA test. The visit to Bellinger's office is free.

Advanced cardiac life support class planned
WELLSBORO - Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital will hold a two-day certification class in advanced cardiac life support from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday in the first-floor conference room. Registration is required.
The class provides registered nurses, physicians and paramedics with the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate and manage the first 10 minutes of an adult ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia arrest. The instructors will be Dr. Donald Shaw and Linda Patterson.

Lock Haven Hospital to hold uniform sale
The employee activity committee of Lock Haven Hospital will hold a uniform, shoe and accessory sale from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday in the activities room of the hospital Extended Care Unit, 24 Cree Drive.
The sale will feature a wide selection of the latest styles, prints and colors for uniforms and professional work shoes from major manufacturers. Items will include high-quality scrubs, jackets, smocks and pants in solids, patterns, logoed and specialty designs.
Health care professionals and those employed in dental, veterinarian and other uniformed settings may attend. Cash, check, Master Card, Visa, Discover and American Express payments will be accepted.
Lecture focuses on community medicine
LEWISBURG - The third annual Charles P. Fasano Memorial Lecture will be held at 7 p.m. April 17 in Trout Auditorium, Vaughan Literature Building, on the campus of Bucknell University. It is free and open to the public.
Sejal S. Patel will discuss "The Roseto Study: The Promise and Practice of Community Medicine." It will center on how community cohesion affects an individual's physical health. It looks at the life and habits of the Roseto community and its impact on the health of its residents.
The lecture is based on The Roseto Study - an in-depth look at the Northampton County town of Roseto in the 1960s by researchers at the University of Oklahoma. The town's residents were found to have one-third the national average of death from heart disease even though they smoked as much, exercised less, weighed more and had higher blood pressure and serum cholesterol levels than the standard American.
Fasano practiced medicine in the Central Susquehanna Valley since 1973. He maintained an active medical practice until his death in March 2009.
Talk on independent living scheduled
April 18 is the last day to register for a free discussion on "STEP Office of Aging Services: Your Pathway to Independent Living" that will be held 8:30-10 a.m. April 25 at ManorCare Williamsport North, 300 Leader Drive.
Jean Sullivan, of the Lycoming County Office of Aging, will be the presenter.
A free pancake breakfast will be offered to all.
