Burn barrel leads to blaze

April 10, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

An unattended burn barrel was the cause of a wildfire near Spook Hollow Road and Timber Lane in Piatt Township Monday afternoon, according to fire officials. Before being brought under control, the fire burned 2 acres of woodland and came close to a house on Timber Lane. "It is unadvisable and dangerous for people to burn on a windy day when there hasn't been much rain," said Independent Hose Co. Fire Chief Bob Sheets. Firefighters checked the area for hot spots with ATV's equipped with water tanks and left the area about 6:20 p.m. Both fire companies from Jersey Shore, along with volunteers from Antes Fort and Woodward and Old Lycoming townships, responded.
