MONTGOMERY - For the second time in five days, a young man was killed in the county after he was ejected from his car during a crash, state police said.
The latest fatality claimed the life of Derek Ray Bonnell, 23, of 789 Snaury Town Road, Clinton Township, who died of injuries he suffered when his 2000 Cadillac and a Ford pickup truck collided at Route 405 and Brick Church Road in the township about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, Trooper Travis Doebler said.
"Bonnell was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected," Doebler said.
Both vehicles overturned and landed in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, damaging a few headstones, Doebler said.
Following the collision, the Cadillac went "end over end, landing on its wheels, facing northwestwhile the pickup overturned multiple times, landing on the driver side, facing southwest," Doebler said.
The driver of the truck, Bryce Allen Strawser, 28, of 25 S. Main St., suffered minor injuries and declined treatment at the scene, Doebler said.
However, Strawser, an employee of Halliburton, was later taken to the Muncy Valley Hospital since he was driving a company truck and company policy requires employees involved in crashes to get examined at a hospital, fire officials said.
Doebler said Bonnell was eastbound on Brick Church Road "at a high rate of speed" and failed to stop for a stop sign. His car struck the passenger side of Strawser's truck as he was heading south on Route 405, Doebler said.
Bonnell landed underneath his car, investigators said. Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr. pronounced him dead of the scene of blunt force trauma injuries.
Volunteer firefighters from Clinton and Washington townships responded to the crash, which was about a mile north of the borough.
A team of Halliburton employees responded and spent part of the morning cleaning up crash debris and trying to repair some of the damaged tombstones in the cemetery.
On Tuesday afternoon, a 19-year-old Linden man died when he was ejected from his SUV as it rolled several times on Interstate 180 in Montoursville. A 17-year-old female passenger also was ejected and is recovering from her injuries.
