The Williamsport Music Club recently announced that Jennifer Judd, a senior at Williamsport Area High School, is the 2012 winner of the $1,500 Budd Memorial Scholarship.
The scholarship is offered annually to a qualified Lycoming County high school senior who is planning to pursue higher education in music.
Judd is the daughter of Jeffrey and Ann Judd, Williamsport. She is a private voice student of Michelle Rebeck and is planning to pursue a degree in music education at Wheaton College in Illinois.
She won the competition with a performance of "Il mio bel foco" by Benedetto Marcello. She learned about the scholarship through her high school music teachers Kent Weaver and Eric Clayton.
Judd takes three music courses at Williamsport: Music Theory I and II, Choir and Orchestra. She sings in Les Chanteuses, a women's select singing ensemble, under the direction of Weaver and Clayton. She has entered the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Choir festivals at the district and regional level during her sophomore, junior and senior years, and made all states during her junior year. She entered PMEA Orchestra Districts her senior year.
She has performed in several musical productions, including "Kiss Me, Kate," "Grease" and "Sweeney Todd," and leads worship for Petros, a Christian club.
She will perform at 7:30 p.m. May 1 during the Williamsport Music Club Gala concert at Robert M. Sides Family Music Center, 210 Mulberry St.
The concert, which is free and open to the public, will take place during National Music Week.
The music club is an affiliate of the Pennsylvania and National Federation of Music Clubs.
Students applying for the scholarship must submit a performance tape or CD in advance.
They also must perform memorized material from standard repertoire. The scholarship committee chairwomen are Doris Teufel and Marilyn Burget.
