The peanut butter issue

May 1, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

We want our peanut butter and we aren't leaving until we get it! That is what we should be saying as a society to the corporations and suppliers who are putting less product in our containers at the grocery store. How many of us actually go to the grocery store and complain about how high the bill is for all the groceries.

Now imagine standing in line and complaining that you had to spend an extra 50 cents on a can of peanut butter that actually contained less peanut butter than the one you bought last time that was fifty cents cheaper. The kicker: It's all in the packaging.

Did you know that by changing the packaging of a product the consumer is actually getting less yet paying more? Over time the amount will continue to diminish and our wallets will be howling for mercy in the end. Companies are saving money by changing the packaging of their product.

This in turn makes for less product but don't worry the company is saving bucko bucks. I am more worried that I can feed my family on what little income I actually make and I should not have to worry about the amount of product being less because of some new fancy package.

Some of these changes are hardly noticeable. For example, peanut butter is in the same container so it looks like the same amount that you have purchased before but what they don't tell you is that they have made the indent on the bottom of the jar bigger so less product is actually in there.

I, for one, am tired of overpaying at the grocery store but now I have to think about what I am actually buying because I want more bang for my buck.
