TURBOTVILLE - Gone are the days when a scheduled date with Montgomery can be used as an extra day of practice or to see how an athlete responds in a different event. Teams competing with the Red Raiders this season typically had to use their best lineups to win, and sometimes that wasn't enough.
The Montgomery boys and girls entered Tuesday's dual meet at Warrior Run with seven combined victories and the girls increased that total by one with a surprise victory over the surprising Defenders who came into Tuesday meet with just a loss to HAC-III champion Southern Columbia.
The Red Raider girls received strong performances in the field, in particular the throws, as they outscored Warrior Run by nine and overcome a small deficit on the track to pull off the 77-73 victory.
"We've been a second-class sport for so long and it's nice to see people coming out to support the track (program)," said Montgomery coach Sam Harer. "Our record is not great, but we are competing with everybody. "The good thing is schools don't say oh here comes Montgomery again. We are competing and I am proud of all of them."
Junior Allysa Hitesman helped Montgomery (5-5, 2-3 HAC-III) dominate in the throws with a first place in the shot put and a second-place in the discus, where the Red Raiders scored a 1-2-3 sweep. In all, Montgomery outscored Warrior Run 18-9 in the throws.
"With our team success everybody is there to cheer you on and it's been nice," said Hitesman. "Last year there was a couple people there, but this year everyone is there cheering you on and it's great. I love the support."
Hitesman won the shot put with a throw of 32 feet, 9 inches and teammate Sarah Wigg won the discus at 96-7. Warrior Run's Steph Shamburg won the javelin with a toss of 108-4.
Montgomery took advantage of Warrior Run missing its top two hurdlers and swept the 300 hurdles and took first and second in the 100s.
Still, Warrior Run (4-2, 3-2) had an opportunity to win the meet in the 1,600-meter relay, but the Defenders' lead runner left the track with an injury, allowing the Red Raiders to coast to an easy win and the five points to seal the team win.
Montgomery's record holders in the pole vault each picked up five team points for their respective teams. Dominick Galanti tied his school record with a vault of 13-3 to win the boys event and Kiana Gough won the girls at 9-6.
Gough also picked up important team points in the 100-meter dash (2nd) and long jump (3rd).
Warrior Run (5-1, 4-1 HAC-III) won the boys meet 103 1/2-46-1/2. Dan Isenberg won the 3,200 and was part of the winning 3,200-meter relay during his final home track meet for the Defenders
"I came in today and everyone was like, 'this is your last home meet' and I was like wow it really is," said Isenberg, who has been with the program for four years. "I never really thought about it before. It was always worry about the next meet and try to do as good as you can. Today it was like last home meet and like, wow."
Montgomery's Colton Harer won the javelin and high jump.
