A 46-year-old city man was struck and killed late Wednesday night by a hit-run driver on High Street, just east of Sixth Avenue, city police said.
The pedestrian was identified as Mark Jeirles, of Taylor Place, police said. He was crossing in the middle of the street at about 11:20 p.m. when he was hit by a westbound motorist who never stopped, police said.
Jeirles, who was thrown about 30 yards, was pronounced dead at the scene by Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr. He said Jeirles died of blunt force trauma injuries.

City police investigators returned Thursday afternoon to the scene of Wednesday night’s deadly hit-run pedestrian accident at Sixth Avenue and High Street. Using equipment that collects measurements and helps construct a diagram of the entire scene are Lt. Arnold Duck, left, and Patrolman Mark Sechrist.
Kiessling said the victim was killed on impact.
The offending driver sped from the scene, police said.
Officers spent a considerable about of time developing and following leads in the case and, sometime Thursday, police recovered the vehicle, Capt. Michael Orwig confirmed. He declined to disclose where and when the vehicle was located.
It has been impounded, he said.
"The case is moving forward steadily," Orwig said Thursday night.
An arrest was pending, and additional information will be released later, Orwig said.
