A city man who is HIV-positive and had sexual relations with a teenage girl that resulted in the birth of a baby received a state prison sentence of 13 to 30 years Monday in County Court.

Lawrence Larry Newman, 50, of 929 Park Ave. ,was sentenced by Judge Marc F. Lovecchio.

Lovecchio said the penalty imposed is basically a life sentence. "I don't know if you'll get out of prison alive."

Newman pleaded guilty Jan. 6. It was determined he didn't meet criteria to be considered a sexually violent predator.

Newman said he began the relationship because his wife died.

Lovecchio read from letters Newman wrote begging him for forgiveness. "I beg you, please," he wrote. "I'm sorry."

Newman also wrote about having urine thrown at him in while in prison the last 20 months and being called racial names.

"While I appreciate your remorse, it's a heinous act," Lovecchio said.

The judge said it would be "hard to describe the impact on the girl as she gets older."

It was not known whether the girl has been tested for the AIDS or HIV virus.
