Elm Park looking at full summer schedule

May 7, 2012
From staff reports , Williamsport Sun-Gazette

While the number of slow-pitch teams has declined in recent years at Elm Park, there has been an increased interest in the Jr. Olympic games. That, along with the popular Yuengling Invitational and high school district and state playoff games, headline a busy spring and summer at Elm Park.

Penn College softball coach Roger Harris is directing the Junior ASA leagues that feature 12-U, 14-U and 16-U girls. League games are played Tuesdays and Wednesdays. There are five games per night with doubleheaders on Fields 1 and 2. The league teams feature players from within a 50-mile radius of Williamsport. The league also will sponsor four individual tournaments at Elm Park from early June through the first weekend of October.

In addition to ASA, Elm Park also will be hosting district high school playoff games starting in two weeks. All three district finals for Class A, AA and AAA will be played there.

There will be six slow-pitch softball tournaments scheduled this summer. The headliner is the Yuengling Invitational which runs the weekend of July 6-8. That event attracts interest from more than 100 slow-pitch teams throughout the state as well as from New York, New Jersey and Maryland. All proceeds from the tournament go to the Williamsport Lions Club.

Another event this summer at Elm Park will be the Pennsylvania State Correctional Officers Tournament. That is scheduled for the last weekend of July and usually attracts about 20 teams. The slow-pitch season concludes with the 44th Annual Pepsi-Cola Invitational Labor Day Invitational.

Elm Park is open to and welcomes all age groups to form and to participate in league play each year. Information can be obtained by contacting Don Phillips at (570)?777-0165.
