Alexis Bower pitched a 1-hit shutout and hit a two-run home run as Williamsport blanked St. Mary's 2-0 on the road Monday and captured its second straight Central Penn League championship. The title ensures Williamsport (15-2, 6-0) of no worse than a No. 2 seed for the District 2-4 Class AAAA playoffs. The Millionaires also won that last year.
"It's good for the girls to get back-to-back titles and to get it in a tight game that we have to used to for playoffs," coach Quint Bower said. "It was a very good game and both pitchers threw well, we just got the big hit when we needed it."
That came in the third inning when Bower crushed a two-run home run. She also pitched 6 1/3 innings of perfect softball, allowing only a bloop single with one out in the seventh while also striking out 13.
Maddy Yorke and Mariah Berguson each had two RBIs to lead Liberty past Cowanesque Valley, 7-3. Berguson and Rachel Strange each had a double as well.
