Teen passenger killed when car hit by train, driver is critical

MILTON (AP) - Neighbors say there's no crossing gate at the intersection where a teen was killed when the car she was riding in was struck by a train.

The Northumberland County coroner's office says 17-year-old Maxine Eschbach died Monday when the car being driven by another teen was struck by a freight train Monday afternoon in Milton. Officials say the vehicle was dragged about a fifth of a mile.

Authorities say the car's 16-year-old driver, Kim Bergenstock, was hospitalized in critical condition.

Police still are trying to determine what caused the crash. Residents who live near the crossing said it's not unusual for motorists and pedestrians to disregard the crossing lights.
