Hilda Garverick — Albright LIFE participant spotlight

May 16, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

A lifelong Williamsport resident, Hilda Garverick graduated from Williamsport High School and took her first job as a waitress at the Moose Club, where she worked for 13 years.

She then went on to work at Carey McFalls where she made Christmas trees. She also has been an Avon representative since 1967. An avid cat and dog lover, Garverick spent more than 25 years pet-sitting for local families.

She is the mother of six children and has numerous grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

One of her favorite volunteer jobs over the years was as "Grandma Cocoa," serving hot cocoa to the crossing guard students at Sheridan Elementary School. Some of her favorite hobbies include playing Canasta, card games, doing ceramics and decorating at Christmas.

Garverick enrolled in Albright LIFE in January 2011 and said she thinks of Albright LIFE as her new home and that the participants and staff are one big happy family.

She also is an Albright LIFE greeter, a program designed to help new participants adjust to attending the LIFE Center. She says she likes the variety of activities and outings available at LIFE, including exercise, noodleball, fishing, air hockey, scenic drives, checkers, birthday parties and more.

She also appreciates how much the program does to make participants' lives better, including providing eyeglasses, walkers, dentures and more.

For more information about Albright Life, visit the day center at 901 Memorial Ave., or call 322-5433. Albright LIFE (Living Independently for Elders) is Pennsylvania's version of the nationally recognized PACE program (Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly). LIFE's comprehensive array of services meet the social, medical, emotional, spiritual and nutritional needs of individuals 55 and older.

This mix of services allows participants to remain healthy and active in the place they call home for as long as possible.

In addition, LIFE services are a blessing for both participants and their families and caregivers, who appreciate the support and benefits the program provides.
