City pools to open in 1 week

The Williamsport Recreation Commission held a session Friday at Newberry Park and members were most excited about the planned grand opening of the swim season at East End and Brandon Park pools at noon next Saturday.

Recreation Director Justin Simpson, who helped create a 15-page summer activity guide that the commission reviewed, said Mayor Gabriel J. Campana plans to be at the opening of East End along with city Police Chief Gregory A. Foresman.

Simpson said the pools' success obviously depends on good weather. The temperature is supposed to be in the mid 80s, he said, after reviewing the long-term forecast.

Memorial Pool is closed this year because the liner was leaking and conditions were unsafe, according to Campana.

Two hours after the pools open, volunteers will don work gloves and help clean up Shaw Place Park.

Simpson said a number of counselors for the summer camps have come from area school districts.

"I have had a lot of teachers who want to be camp counselors," he said.

Lifeguards at the pools are getting new red life vests and significant cleanup has taken place in preparation of swim season, Simpson said.

The commission's next meeting is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. June 11 at East End Park.
