ATHENS Devon Fisher was clearly excited as he crossed the finish line in the 400 relay Saturday. He turned toward the infield, and more importantly the camera that records the finishing times for the District 4 track meet, and spread his arms out wide.
Can you blame him? Williamsport was in the midst of an almost flawless day in the Class AAA meet at Athens that brought the Millionaires another team title. The win for Fisher was his second of three for the day, and the 42.61-second time broke a 25-year old district record set by Williamsport.
It was a pretty good day for the Millionaires and Fisher was reveling in it.
"I actually got a warning for that," Fisher said with a smile on his face. "I guess I was showboating, but I was really excited because everything clicked. I didn't think anything of it, but I guess (the officials) didn't like it. I got it out of my system and I learned a lesson from it. I have to remember to keep my enthusiasm to a minimum."
It didn't even come close to putting a damper on the effort the Millionaires put forth Saturday. Williamsport won five individual events (Fisher in the 100 and 200, Howard Hinds in the high jump, Chet Schwoyer in the 3,200 and Weston Cuozzo in the 300 hurdles) and also captured a pair of relay wins to earn 176 points and the Class AAA team title. Selinsgrove finished second with 159 points.
"Today was a beautiful day to come out and run," Fisher said after winning the 200. "Howard Hinds, after hurting his hand, came out and jumped over 6-2 in the high jump and he (set a personal record) in the javelin. We had a lot of step ups in the field and a lot of places that we probably shouldn't have had. But it all helped."
In all, 13 local boys through both Class AA and AAA earned spots at next week's PIAA meet in Shippensburg. North Penn's Reece Correll (high jump), Lewisburg's Brandon Smith (javelin) and Jersey Shore's Tyler Kachelries (javelin) and Cody Allen (1,600) all earned district gold Saturday as individuals.
Southern Columbia took the Class AA boys title with 89 points. Mount Carmel was second with 69.5 points.
Fisher had a dominant day for the Millionaires. He won the 100 in 11-seconds flat, his best time of the year. He won by nearly a half-second. The 400 relay team won by .38 seconds in setting a new district meet record. And in timed finals, Fisher won the 200 by just .06.
The winning tone for the Millionaires was set early when the 3,200 relay team took advantage of a Shamokin runner collapsing in the final 100 meters to win a race it was trailing by a good 30 meters.
"We'll take anything we can get," Williamsport 3,200 relay anchor Herb Stelly said. "We'd rather have it be a good race than what happened and I hope the kid who fell is OK."
"That was a big surprise. We were getting smoked and somehow we pulled it off," Fisher said. "But after that we were really enthusiastic about getting out there and pulling in more wins to get the district title."
Cuozzo kept the excitement rolling when he ran the 300 hurdles in under 39 seconds for the first time in his career. It was a goal the sophomore had hoped to reach by the time he was a senior, but getting a push from second-place finisher Ryan Wary of Shikellamy, Cuozzo ended up a little ahead of schedule.
"That's definitely what I needed," Cuozzo said. "He just pushes me all the time. He always tells me he's going to push me and I'm going to push him. He makes me do better every race."
Cuozzo ran a 39.07 in the 300 hurdles a week ago at the PHAC meet and it was the first time he saw any kind of listing as to where he ranked in the state. He was encouraged when his friend showed him a printout that this time was good enough for 16th best in the state in Class AAA.
He also knew his goal of getting under 39 seconds was well within reach at the district meet. His 38.97 yesterday was nearly a second better than the state qualifying standard, and nearly a half-second better than Wary's 39.49.
"Hopefully now I go to 13th or 14th best in the state with that time," Cuozzo said. "I'm going to feel pretty good going to states knowing there's very elite runners there. I'm going to try my hardest and see what I can place and know that I still have two years left to make my mark."
Kachelries worked through an injury that kept him out the last two weeks to win his second consecutive district title in the Class AAA javelin. His winning throw of 171 feet, 11 inches was nowhere near his personal record of 187 feet, but it was good enough to get him to Shippensburg next week for states.
He's developed tendonitis in his right elbow after he "tweaked" it recently. He wore black tape around his elbow during the meet. He said the heat during yesterday's meet helped keep his elbow loose.
"I felt like it was my last chance, I might as well go for it," Kachelries said. "It felt pretty good. It ached a bit, but other than that it was OK."
Kachelries is hoping the week leading up to the state meet will help him heal a little more so he can be at his best when he has to. He feels like he'll have to throw at least 190 feet in order to have a shot at a state medal, but it's a distance he feels he can hit.
"I could be just another PR (personal record) away," Kachelries said. "I feel a lot more relaxed now. I just wanted to make it to states again this year. If I do well, great. If I don't do as well, that's the way it's supposed to happen, I guess."
