Unfair portrayal

May 22, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

I have been reading your rather frequent tirades against public education editorials for some time now. A recent headline "Numbers Belie Corbett's Anti-Education Reputation," piqued my interest, especially the quote that stated, "Our guess is that (40.3 percent) is a higher percentage than most state budgets."

Rather than guessing, I did a bit of research.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Vermont spends the most (36.7 percent) state and local government dollars on education. U.S. government spending.com reports that Pennsylvania spends 29 percent.

Based on these statistics, Pennsylvania is actually below the national average (29.1 percent), so in reality, the numbers do tend to support our governor's anti-education reputation.

There is no doubt that there are financial concerns at all levels of government.

But it seems to this reader that the Sun-Gazette is portraying education as the scapegoat for the Commonwealth's economic problems.
