Low-cost eyeglass program available

WELLSBORO - A low-cost eyeglass program will be available from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the CareerLink building, 56 Plaza Drive.

North Western PA Optical Clinic is a privately funded program that provides income-eligible persons with eyeglasses, including lined bifocals, for a set fee. No-lines are available for an additional cost. Solid tint also is available.

Income guidelines are $21,032 for one person, $27,992 for two people and increases by $6,960 for each additional person in the household.

Glasses are paid for at the time in cash or by money order, measured for the lenses and then mailed to patients' homes.

Susquehanna Health plans healthy events

Susquehanna Health will hold the following healthy events to educate the community:

Susquehanna Health Spirit of Women featuring orthopedic surgeon Dr. Michael Hoffman - 5:30 p.m. today at Susquehanna Tower, Williamsport Regional Medical Center. Hoffman will present "Your Hips Don't Lie" and participants will learn about the causes of hip pain, prevention and treatment options including the minimally invasive anterior hip replacement procedure. Following the presentation, a tour of the new Joint and Spine Center will be provided. The event is free and includes light refreshments. Registration is required by calling 1-877-883-4791.

The LifeCenter will be closed on Memorial Day.

Susquehanna Striders provides walking for fun and fitness. Earn incentives and health benefits by joining Susquehanna Striders, Susquehanna Health's free community-wide walking program. Check out the Striders' City Mile, downtown Williamsport's heart walk on Pine and West Fourth streets, and the 1-mile loop at Montoursville's Indian Park. Screenings for stroke, osteoporosis

On Thursday, Life Line Screening will offer five screenings to determine the risk of stroke and osteoporosis. A fee applies.

Screenings will be held at the Greenview Alliance Church, 1955 Warrensville Road, Montoursville.

The screenings will identify blocked arteries, irregular heart rhythm, abdominal aortic aneurysms and hardening of the arteries in the legs. A bone density screening to assess osteoporosis risk also will be given. The tests take 60 to 90 minutes to complete.

Evangelical plans program on osteoporosis

SELINSGROVE - Dr. Sorina Dancea, a board-certified rheumatologist with Evangelical Rheumatology, will discuss osteoporosis prevention, diagnosis and treatment options at 6:30 p.m. May 29 in the Susquehanna Valley Mall Community Zone.

Osteoporosis often advances without any symptoms or pain. It is characterized by a weakening and thinning of the bones that result in fractures, sometimes with no warning signs. But, it can be treated and, better yet, prevented.

Geisinger offers free skin cancer screenings

BLOOMSBURG - Geisinger Medical Center's dermatology department will conduct free skin cancer screenings from 1 to 4 p.m. May 31 at Geisinger Medical Group's 2407 Reichart Road office.

More than three million Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer this year. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 9,000 people will die from a melanoma skin cancer and another 3,000 will die from a non-melanoma skin cancer this year.

Individuals with moles, skin changes or who have been exposed to ultraviolet rays may be at risk for skin cancer, but early detection is key to successfully treat skin cancer.

- Free blood pressure screenings:

June 1, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at Mifflinburg Bank and Trust, Lewisburg Branch

June 21, 10-11 a.m., at the West End Senior Center

June 26, 9-11 a.m., at the Milton YMCA

Mondays, 9 a.m.-noon, at the Community Health Education Center in Lewisburg near the hospital

Wednesdays, noon-4 p.m., Community Health Education Center

Fridays, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Community Health Education Center

- Free blood sugar screenings:

June 12, 8-10 a.m., at the Susquehanna Valley Mall, Boscovs north court, near fountain (blood pressures provided by Area Agency on Aging)

- Heel scans:

June 8, 1-3 p.m., Community Health Education Center. In order to qualify, you must be over age 65, post-menopausal or pre-menopausal with a high-risk factor, have not had a DXA scan in the past two years and have not had a heel bone density in the last year.

- Body composition screening: Measure of weight, body fat percentage and body mass index. Free/no appointment needed.

June 13, 4-6 p.m., at Weis Markets, West Branch Highway, Lewisburg.
