Hughesville resident Kelsie LeVan will serve as a City Year AmeriCorps member at City Year Philadelphia for the 2012-13 school year.
City Year is an education-focused, nonprofit organization where young adults commit to a year of full-time service to work with students in the highest-need urban schools to keep students on track to graduate.
LeVan is a recent graduate of Elizabethtown College, where she studied political science and criminal justice. While at Elizabethtown, LeVan actively was involved as a peer mentor, tutor and guide.
She was a member of the Honors Program, as well as Alpha Lambda Delta, Alpha Kappa Delta and Pi Sigma honor societies.
She was nominated to speak at the 73rd annual Pennsylvania Political Science Association Conference, where she presented her senior thesis, "Secession: South Sudan's Journey Toward Independence." LeVan also participated in three service trips to Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana to help rebuild homes devastated by natural disasters and mentor children residing in inner-city neighborhoods.
"It has always been important to me to give back and have a positive impact in the world," LeVan said. "I applied to City Year because it provided a diverse experience, everything from working with students to physical service and leadership development."
