West Fourth Street paving to get under way next week

June 5, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

Resurfacing will cause single-lane closures on a two-mile section of West Fourth Street in the Newberry section of Williamsport and Woodward Township, starting Monday.

The resurfacing will take place from the intersection with the Fourth Street interchange to the Williamsport Area High School entrance near Hillside Avenue. The project includes roadway base repairs, shoulder upgrades and new pavement markings.

A restriction in the contract prohibited work to begin until after the school year finished, said Rick Mason, state Department of Transportation spokesman.

Work by prime contractor Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. will be performed under daylight signing with flaggers controlling traffic flow. Delays may occur.

The $931,300 project is scheduled to be completed by early August.

After completion, the road likely will not need any major maintenance for the next 10 to 12 years, Mason said.
