Sun-Gazette reporter Savannah Barr did an excellent job of interviewing Tony "The Flag Man" DiSalvo preceding this year's Flag Day Parade. The theme of the interview and the parade focused on showing respect for our nation's flag. Just as Mr. DiSalvo recalled his father telling him as a young boy "when the flag goes by, you need to stand and show respect", his goal now is to "try to get all the young kids involved" in a strong sense of respect for the flag.
Unfortunately, not all children in our community will be able to experience learning from "The Flag Man," but all parents have the opportunity to help their kids open up the ultimate citizen's guide for the proper display of the American flag and learn how to show it the respect it deserves. That ultimate guide is The Flag Code, and its guidance is known as "Flag Etiquette". There is much more to showing respect for our flag than Mr. DiSalvo was able to describe in the brief interview.
