Joseph James Daniel Wheal

Joseph James Daniel Wheal, of Muncy, Pa., passed away on Friday, June 15, 2012, at the Muncy Valley Skilled Nursing Unit.

He was born on Feb. 14, 1917, in Perth Amboy, N.J., to the late Caroline (Orme) and James Daniel Wheal, who had emigrated from England. The family moved to Pennsylvania in 1929.

Joseph married Helen Pauline Spring on Oct. 25, 1945.

Joseph graduated from Sonestown High School in 1935. He worked as a farmer for many years and was also a cabinet maker with the Anton Waldman Co. In his retirement, Joe enjoyed extensive traveling and photographing the many trips. He also enjoyed making baskets, from cutting the oak tree, through the process of making the reeds that he then wove into baskets.

In addition to his wife, Joseph is survived by sons, James (Linda) Wheal, Athens, Pa., Daniel (Suzanne) Wheal, Muncy, Pa., and William Wheal, Colorado Springs, Co. Surviving grandchildren are James D. (fiancee Kay) Wheal, Ithaca, N.Y., Michael J. (Lori) Wheal, N.Y.C., N.Y., Christopher A. (Jamie) Dahl, Ft. Collins, Colo. and Matthew S. (fiancee Lisa) Wheal, Muncy, Pa.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by grandson, David W. Wheal and brother, Clarence Wheal.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, June 25, 2012, at the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, with Paul Shaner officiating. Burial will follow in Lairdsville Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, June 25, 2012, at the funeral home.

Flowers are welcome; however, memorial contributions may also be made to the Lairdsville Church (formerly Lairdsville Lutheran Church), P.O. Box 87, Lairdsville, PA 17742.
