Police: City man tries to eat bag of heroin

June 21, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

A city man arrested for allegedly possessing 20 bags of heroin in a car in which he was riding had to be taken to a medical center after "chewing up" yet another bag of heroin in the back of a Montoursville police cruiser, according to borough police.

Daniel James Williams Jr., 24, of 1035 Hepburn St., was placed in custody at Broad Street and Loyalsock Avenue about 11:45 p.m. June 6.

He was riding in the back seat of a vehicle that an officer stopped for a signal problem, police said. The driver, whose identity was not available, was suspected of driving under the influence of intoxicants.

All occupants were ordered out of the vehicle. Soon after Williams climbed out, the officer discovered 20 packets of heroin where Williams had been sitting.

Williams was checked for weapons and then put in the back seat of a cruiser, police said. However, within minutes, the officer saw him spit out something on the passenger floor. It turned out to be a bag of heroin Williams allegedly was attempting to chew and swallow, police said.

Williams was taken to the Williamsport Regional Medical Center, where he was examined and discharged hours later.

He was arraigned before District Judge Gary A. Whiteman on charges of possession with intent to deliver heroin, possession of heroin and tampering with evidence. He remains jailed in the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail.
