State Rep. Rick Mirabito, a Williamsport Democrat, has been seeking a budget amendment.
State Rep. Garth Everett, a Muncy Republican, and state Sen. E. Eugene Yaw, Loyalsock Townshhip?Republican, are working directly with staff members of the state appropriations committee.
That's the two-pronged attack going on right now to restore an aviation patrol unit to the Williamsport Regional Airport.
Mirabito's amendment would direct state police to have an aviation unit at the local airport or risk losing government funding.
Meanwhile, Everett and Yaw say they've gone directly to the people within the state bureaucracy and found the money is there for the local aviation unit. It's simply a matter of getting those people to understand where the unit makes the most sense which is the airport in Montoursville.
"It doesn't appear that any aviators were involved," Everett said. "It came down to bureaucracy a bunch of guys who know nothing about helicopters were the ones who decided where to put the helicopter."
In our view, ignorance is not an excuse in the case of the aviation unit, given its multiple impact locally on crime prevention, crime solving, emergency responses and public safety.
The unit should be restored here now. We hope having two approaches to get it restored doesn't blunt the effect of the lobbying effort of the lawmakers, but we appreciate their efforts and hope they get the justified result for our area.
