MILTON - A young woman was killed Saturday afternoon when her car and another collided on New Berlin Mountain Road, just north of Violet Road, in Union County's Buffalo Township, according to state police.

Amanda Lee Waltman, 22, of Mifflinburg, was pronounced dead at 5:05 p.m. of injuries she suffered when her 2000 Mercury Cougar and a 1993 BMW station wagon driven by Alexandr Tatarin, 43, collided about 3:30 p.m., police said.

Waltman was traveling north of New Berlin Mountain Road and lost control of the vehicle moments after the car's tires on the passenger side came in contact with the fog line, which is the line between the berm and the travel lane, police said.

Waltman then made an abrupt movement to the left, causing the car to begin rotating counterclockwise, police said. The vehicle entered the southbound lane as Tatarin was approaching from that direction, police said.

Tatarin attempted to avoid the collision, but both cars collided as they went off the road. Waltman's vehicle then went down an embankment, traveling an additional 60 feet, police said.

Neither driver was wearing a seat belt, nor were two children who were riding in Tatarin's vehicle, police said. Police did not release Tatarin's address nor did they say if he or the children, ages 4 and 10, were injured in the crash. Both cars sustained extensive damage.

New Berlin volunteer firefighters and fire police responded to the crash.
