Freedom of religion

July 8, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

For these past two weeks, Catholics and others of faith have been holding a Fortnight for Freedom. The means chosen to protect our religious freedom has been prayer, fasting and petitioning the government for a redress of grievances in protest against the HHS mandate to force people of faith, especially Church-related institutions, into violation of their religious beliefs.

This is a clear violation of the First Amendment. It states, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." If forcing one to violate religious beliefs is not prohibiting the free exercise of religion, none of our God-given rights are sacred in the eyes of our present government.

It is time for Catholics to face the fact that the Democrat Party is not your father's party. It has become increasingly a Socialist party and the party of abortion. The Church has never been free under a mature socialist system. See Mexico of the early 1900s, Nazi Germany, and various Communist governments. Two common threads are Socialism and persecution of the Church.

Church organizations and several dioceses are suing the government. After the Supreme Court's ruling on Obama Care, don't depend on them to uphold the Constitution and protect our freedoms. The way to protect our religious freedom is to vote. Remove the government that threatens your freedoms. Vote Barack Obama and Bob Casey out of office. Casey provided the 60th vote to close off debate in the Senate on Obama Care. Register to vote, get out the vote, and vote Republican on Nov. 6. Democrat state and local office holders are your oppressors in training. My high school Civics teacher would not approve, but Vote Straight Republican.
