Treat all life equally

July 8, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

How about those who say they oppose abortion because it's forbidden by the Bible? They say that God sanctified human life, and that abortion is taking life and therefore prohibited by Him. They ought to be consistent.

God sent down the commandment, "Thou shalt not kill." He didn't say, "Thou shalt not kill, except under certain circumstances." It's simple. Anyone should be able to understand it.

The Commandment doesn't say, "Thou shalt not kill, except when thy government tells thee it's ok." Those who oppose abortion should oppose war just as vigorously. They should oppose capital punishment. They should oppose laws that permit the use of deadly force in self-defense.

They are concerned about the sanctity of life. How about the lives of children already born? Thousands die every day from starvation and disease. I don't see too many letters from our clergy about them. I don't see people carrying signs for them. Has any politician recently appealed to voters with promises to protect children outside the womb?

If you believe God said all life is sacred, then it's not complicated. You must treat all life as sacred. Period.
