Home Made Days coincide with Hiawatha anniversary

July 5, 2012

Home Made Days is planned for Friday and Saturday at Susquehanna State Park, and this year's event coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Hiawatha Paddlewheel Riverboat that docks there.

The event is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, according to William E. Nichols Jr., general manager of River Valley Transit.

Besides the artists and crafters, food and music, the riverboat will be holding daily cruises to celebrate.

The setting is expected to include more than 40 vendors displaying and selling hand-crafted jewelry and other home-made trinkets and gifts, plus about a dozen or more booths and carts featuring specialty foods.

That's just a slice of what Home Made Days is all about, according to event co-coordinator Katie Tinney, a customer service representative with River Valley Transit.

Home Made Days once was held in Brandon Park, and while Tinney said that locale was fine, the river setting offers more to do, including a river cruise.

Fact Box

IF YOU GO:

WHAT: Home Made Days

WHEN: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday

WHERE: Susquehanna State Park

Public cruises will be held both days at 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. Special giveaways will be featured for adults and children who board. Anyone who rides this weekend receives a 30th anniversary T-shirt and children, ages 12 and under, get sunglasses.

Entertainment at the park will be provided by a collection of musicians from the area known as Clyde Frog.

"Many in this group spun out of people associated with the Uptown Music Collective and it features some younger and college-age musicians," Tinney said.

With ongoing reconstruction of the DuBoistown Bridge, the park is not accessible from DuBoistown.

"You can't access the park from DuBoistown," Nichols said.

To reach the park, it is best to take Interstate 180 to the Reach Road exit and go to Arch Street or use Arch Street on the city side, Nichols said. Once there, shuttle buses will be running routinely along the length of the park grounds to help get those who don't want to or can't walk to the event.
