Montoursville Area School Board accepted the resignation of school director Roger Leight during its regular monthly meeting Tuesday night.

The board noted it will advertise to fill the board vacancy immediately.

Board President Ellen Stoner explained that Leight decided to step down due to work that keeps him in Ohio much of the time.

The board is expected to fill the seat by next month.

A prospective board member needs the votes of at least five school directors to be appointed.

The board approved the resignation of Lisa Cardennis as technology facilitator. Her resignation is effective July 27.

Jesse Spaar was hired as boys varsity assistant soccer coach at a stipend of $2,100.

School directors approved the resignation of Eugene and Beverly Sellers as a school bus contractor.

Kim Sauers, director of curriculum and instruction, reported to the board that the district is moving students in kindergarten to fourth grade toward a balanced literacy program.

The program, he said, groups students by ability but also combines pupils regardless of reading skills.

It makes use of some phonics-based teaching and includes lots of writing.

He noted it has worked successfully with students in other nations, including Australia and New Zealand.

"There is room for improvement in our reading," he said.

Sauers noted the writing skills of district students can stand improvement as well.

"We can improve our writing best by how we teach reading," he said.
