John L. Haas Jr.

Mr. John L. Haas Jr., 79, of 354 Jake Wenner Lane, Williamsport, died Thursday, July 12, 2012, at his home.

Mr. Haas was a member of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church at Bastress. He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Haas was awarded a Ph.D. from Penn State University. His doctoral degree was in geology. He had retired from the United States Geological Survey as a geochemist.

Born Aug. 26, 1932, at Williamsport, he was the son of the late John L. Sr. and Laura Agnes Miller Haas.

John was active as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout volunteer and also a volunteer with 4-H.

He and his wife, the former Mary M. Bower, would have shared 46 years of marriage this July 16.

Surviving are his wife, Mary M. Haas, at home; his two sons, Kenneth J. (Adrianne) Haas, of Williamsport, and Karl A. (Janine) Haas, of Clearbrook, Va. He is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Flook, of Bastress, and 15 grandchildren.

In addition to his late parents, he was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Florence Stopper Haas and his two sisters, Barb Tice and Anna Catherine Laughlin.

Funeral services and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church at Bastress. His priest, Father Bert Kozen, will be the celebrant. Interment will immediately follow in the church cemetery.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at the Charles M. Noll Funeral Home, 1 E. Central Ave., South Williamsport, on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.
