LEWISBURG - Many families with aging parents or other elderly members want the peace of mind of knowing their loved ones are being cared for while still remaining in their homes.

Visiting Angels is helping fill that need.

Daniel and Robin Miller earlier this year opened up the caregiver agency to serve seniors in the region.

Daniel said the agency has about a half-dozen clients but is looking to expand.

The agency's caregivers, the couple explained, help seniors stay in their homes by giving them assistance with housekeeping, meal preparation, errands, bathing and grooming, or even just companionship.

It's a service that the two take very seriously.

Daniel brings business experience to Visiting Angels.

It included running his own automobile repair and parts business for many years.

Together, the couple bring some 30 years of experience in the health care field.

In deciding to open Visiting Angels they did a lot of research to learn if elderly care services were a good fit for the area.

"Visiting Angels is the only agency that requires caregivers to have senior care experience," Daniel said. "That's important."

That can be vital to a caregiver who might be faced with such situations as caring for an 85-year-old man suffering from dementia.

Caregivers, he noted, are carefully screened and interviewed before being hired by Visiting Angels.

"We have to document that they have worked successfully for two years in the industry," he said.

For many families contemplating care for their elderly loved ones, options beyond a nursing home aren't considered.

But Daniel noted that agencies such as Visiting Angels not only allow persons to remain at home, but can be less costly than a nursing home.

"Have you heard of anyone say they want to go to a nursing home?" He said.

Clients come with different needs and receive care for varied amounts of time.

"We have clients who get care up to 72 hours a week," he said. "We have one 95-year-old lady we just take to lunch every other week."

No matter the client's needs, it's important that caregivers are "willing to engage."

"We go from Williamsport to Selinsgrove, from Danville to Middleburg," Robin said.

Visiting Angels is part of a national network of home care agencies.
