School closings up for vote tonight

July 17, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

The Williamsport Area School Board is expected to vote tonight on closing two elementary schools.

The board meets at 6 p.m. in the multipurpose room of Cochran Elementary School.

The district was required by the state Department of Education to wait 90 days after holding a public hearing before making a decision on what schools to close. That hearing was April 16. The board is faced with closing two of three schools - Round Hills, Sheridan and Stevens.

The discussion has been a hot topic since it was announced that the district was exploring closures in March. Since the announcement, board members have heard presentations on building conditions, staffing and transportation.

The agenda for tonight's meeting lists the possibility of closing each school separately.
