West End 13s, 14s, win in state tourneys

After losing their opening game in the pool play tournament to Bromall Newton, West End responded by winning three straight games which was capped off with an 11-1 win over Brookhaven in five innings on Monday evening in the 13-year-old Babe Ruth state tournament at Altoona.

The win puts West End at 3-1 through pool play and gives them the number one seed in the tournament and an automatic first rund bye. West End plays at 5 p.m. tonight against Bromall Newtown.

West End threw three pitchers and gave up one run and one hit through five.

While West End's pitching was solid, its hitting was just as good. VanStavoren and Devin Nevin each had two RBIs while Marty Clark had a double, was walked twice, had an RBI and scored three runs. Aaron Orgitano had an RBI as well in the win.

West End plays Bromall Newtown in a rematch from the first game of pool play they lost.

In Age 14 Babe Ruth, West End won its pool play game 12-2 over Mifflin County to earn the top seed out of pool play and advance to the semifinals Wednesday in Milroy vs. the Perry County-Franklin Twp. winner.

Tre Ramos struck out 9 and allowed one hit in West End's win.

In 10-11 Baseball, Loyalsock's Aiden Gair gave up just one hit, struck out five and didn't yield a single run as through five innings as Loyalsock went on to defeat Cressona, 7-3, in the Section 3 tournament. The win forces the "if game," meaning that Loyalsock will play Cressona again tonight at Mahoney City at 5:30 p.m.

Whoever wins takes the Section 3 championship.
