Maitland, a two-man band, will perform at 8 p.m. Aug 4 at Barrell 135, 135 W. Third St. The band includes vocalist and guitarist Josh Hines and drummer Jeff Mach. For more information on Maitland, visit their Facebook page at www.facebook.com /maitlandmusic1.

Hines also plays in the band Treehouse.

Hines said some of Maitland's inspirations are Jeff Buckley, Bon Iver, Sigur Ros, and several other artists. For Hines, the mood to write and create varies.

"A lot of different things can inspire me," he said. "It all depends on the day and the circumstances. Also, I don't normally write when I'm in one certain mood. Sometimes I'm excited, other times I'm depressed."

The band takes great interest in nature as well.

"Whether it be hiking, camping or random walks in the forest, we really like spending time with nature," Hines said.

Although Maitland isn't signed to a label, they plan on making a living out of music. They have had multiple performances locally, including at Liberty Fest, which took place in June.

"Liberty Fest was a great experience," Hines said. "The festival itself was a great success; the bands were great and the audience was energetic. We are really looking forward to the next festival."

The band also traveled to New York City to perform and found themselves performing in the subways.

"At first it was difficult because it was so foreign to us," Hines said. "We had to adapt our sound to the space and play according to the train schedules. Once we got in the rhythm of things, it became a lot easier and a lot of people showed their gratitude. It's definitely not the most glorious stage, but you get to meet a lot of people and really see what they think about your music."
