C. Joanne Smith

C. Joanne Smith, 67, of Eagles Mere, died Thursday, July 26, 2012, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

Born Aug. 25, 1944, in Hughesville, she was a daughter of the late Harvey and Gertrude Keebler Barto. Her husband of 45 years, Alvin H. Smith Jr., preceded her in death on May 14, 2012.

Joanne loved Eagles Mere and volunteered countless hours to help preserve Eagles Mere's rich heritage. She loved flowers and gardening and could often be found sharing her talent throughout the borough. Joanne served altruistically as treasurer of the Eagles Mere Friends of the Arts and board member of the Eagles Mere Museum and the Eagles Mere Federated Church.

Prior to retiring from Proctor and Gamble in 2009, Joanne owned and operated a beauty salon in Eagles Mere for 19 years. She currently serves as Tax Collector for Eagles Mere Borough, a position she has held for many years.

Surviving are a son, Brian E. (Sharon) Smith of Eagles Mere; a granddaughter, Kassandra A. Smith of Eagles Mere; a brother, Fred (Mary) Barto of Hughesville; and a nephew, Edward Barto of Hughesville.

In addition to her parents and husband, Joanne was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Heess and a brother, Robert Barto.

Funeral services will be held noon Monday, at the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, with the Rev. Marie E. Lewis and the Pastor John H. Clark co-officiating. Burial will follow in Eagles Mere Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to the time of services on Monday at the funeral home.

The family will provide the flowers and suggests memorial contributions to the Eagles Mere Museum, P.O. Box 440, Eagles Mere, PA 17731.
