Tornado touched down in Potter County

July 29, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Meteorologists have confirmed a tornado touched down in northern Pennsylvania during powerful storms that knocked out power to thousands statewide.

The National Weather Service says a twister with winds of 80 mph touched down Thursday afternoon near Coudersport, Potter County.

Later that night, authorities say a woman was killed by a falling tree. The Potter County coroner says 66-year-old Linda Button died in Genesee Township, about 150 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

First Energy Corp. reports that about 24,000 customers in western and northern Pennsylvania still were without power Friday night. Numbers had been much higher earlier in the day.

The high winds tore the roof off a volunteer fire hall in Butler County. In Cambria County, WJAC-TV in Johnstown had its Thursday evening newscast knocked off the air by lightning.
