Over the top

August 5, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

I have not been a Penn State Football fan ever; I am a die hard Notre Dame fan. But what is happening to the football program at Penn State is appalling!

I first think that what the NCAA did was "way over the top".

I want to know why the football players of the past are the ones playing in the future, have to be penalized for something they had no control over?

There is NO reason why the football players should have to suffer because of the past coaches, administration, the current governor and board who did nothing they should have done in the beginning.

All the "adults" turned their heads, buried their heads in the sand and allowed the abuse to continue so the "football" program would not be tarnished.

Removing the statue from the football field area was a good move. They need to display it somewhere on campus but not in such an open place. Think about the victims and their family and friends. Think about the negativity that will continually be associated with the statue when outside visitors are on campus.

I believe the public should rally together and get to the NCAA and let them know how they feel. There have been other universities that have had scandals with sports; but, I do not recall such harsh treatment. You should fine the university maybe $10 million and do not have the charity w/paid administration control the spending designate some type of trust to do so. Next, if these students earn a title to go to a bowl game, let them go, just do not give the money received from that bowl to the university for general spending and make half go to the charity and the other half should go into the scholarship fund for recruiting football players.

As for?Coach Paterno, though he did not follow through and thought of the football program more then the victims he and his players won the games, they deserve to keep their records.

And, the media - give it a break already! This has received more coverage than the shooting in Colorado.

Though I am a true Blue and Gold fan, I feel so badly for the victims and the players. Don't penalize them for the faults of a chain of "idiots".
