Lt. Col. and Mrs. Charles A. Berninger, Sumter, S.C., observed their 50th wedding anniversary May 12, 2012.
They were married by the Rev. Lee W. Burnett at Christ Episcopal Church.
Mrs. Berninger, the former Ruth E. Palmer, is a native of South Williamsport. She is the daughter of the late Grace M. and William C. Palmer. She graduated from South Williamsport High School in 1961. She graduated from University of Maryland, College Park, Md., in 1980 and from the former RETS College, now Fortis College, Dayton, Ohio, in 1992. She retired as a medical assistant.

Mr. Berninger, a native of DuBoistown, is the son of the late Nellie M. and George A. Berninger. He graduated from South Williamsport High School in 1961. He received an associate degree from the former Williamsport Area Community College, now Pennsylvania College of Technology, in 1968; a bachelor's degree from Lock Haven University in 1970; a master's degree from Wayne State University, Detroit, Mich., in 1975; and a master's degree from Troy State University, Troy, Ala., in 1977. He served in the Air Force on active duty from 1961 to 1966 and from 1970 to 1993. He was is a combat veteran of the Vietnam War and is a retired Air Force Lt. Col.
They are the parents of two sons, Charles W., Chantilly, Va., and Clark A., Falls Church, Va.
There are three grandchildren.
In honor of their anniversary, the couple went on a cruise to Alaska in May.
