The collapse of a society is often preceded by social unrest and shortages of essential resources.
Well, I would like to add another sign of impending collapse: Warning Labels. You know, those cautions plastered all over any object more hazardous than a cotton ball. I believe that a society's vitality can be measured by the number of warning labels that it feels are needed for risks that should be fairly obvious.
After all, how secure can the future be for a society that needs to warn fellow citizens that coffee is hot, knives are sharp, or that peanut butter contains peanuts?
