Sometime between the hours of 11 p.m. August 2 and 6 a.m. last Friday, 16 of the hanging baskets located in the Historic District on the north side of W. Fourth between Elmira and two poles West of Walnut were RIPPED from the lamp posts. This is not an easy thing to do. Someone had to work hard to accomplish this vandalism.
What joy could someone feel in being so destructive? These plants belong to all of us. The Victorian Christmas committee raises the money to purchase and maintain the baskets.
This is a slap in the face to all citizens of our city. To the many who drive thru the area every day or only once a week it brings a smile to our faces to see that someone cares enough to bring beauty to our surroundings.
Unfortunately, it only takes one to ruin the beauty. Let us all be vigilant and see if we can catch the criminals who did this.
It will take some work and extra funds to put the baskets back but you can be sure that the people who care about our city will be doing just that.
