GOP then, now

August 10, 2012
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

This letter is in response to the letter of August 6 written by Marlene Steele. Leaving aside for a moment the fact that Ms. Steele's letter seemed racist and utterly devoid of supportable premises, I , once again, wonder why the editors seem to print any and every ignorant ranting submitted to it.

I realize that letters are opinions, but on some level, one would think the newspaper would have some responsibility to make sure the premise of the letter has some a smattering would be good of facts before throwing it out to the public to read.

Otherwise, what good is public discourse?

The GOP that Lincoln joined was nothing like the current GOP, and in fact, he and his fellow Republicans were known as "progressives" and "radicals". Lincoln was a moderate Republican. It is likely, futhermore, that Republicans of today would not vote for Abraham Lincoln. And that is something to have fair discourse about.
