To all my friends and loyal readers, please accept my apology for the obvious and unforgiveable error in referring to Joseph P. McCarthy, the infamous Communist hunter, as Eugene McCarthy. This is a good example of engaging the pen before the brain. Nevertheless, the content of the piece received more feedback and interesting comments than anything I have written previously. Obviously the subject of how we used to view politics and how our political campaigns have evolved today is a matter of great interest. Thanks to all of you for your understanding.
