Four Lycoming College football seniors have earned a slot on the USA Football News Division III Preseason Northeast Region All-Star team, as running back Parker Showers, offensive lineman Cody Moyer, defensive tackle Roger Jayne and cornerback Matt Talerico each earned mentions.
The USA Football News Northeast Region includes teams from Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia. Selections were made by coaches, sports information directors, certified players' agents, members of the Football Writers of America, Metropolitan New York Football Writers Association, New England Football Writers Association, Philadelphia College Football Writers Association and the staff of USA Football News.
For their inclusion on the regional team, all four players also earned Honorable Mention status on the outlets Preseason Division III All-American Team. All members of the class of 2013 with no remaining college eligibility who have been chosen to the All-American teams including the Regional All-Stars are candidates to participate in the 2013 Hansen Bowl, a four-day, three-night event that will be held Feb. 15-18.
Showers finished fourth in the Middle Atlantic Conference with an average of 90.7 yards per game in 2011, as his 816 rushing yards were 13th in school history. He posted four games with 90 or more yards and earned MAC Offensive Player of the Week accolades after posting a career-best 152 yards against Wilkes. Showers, who was hampered by an injury during the first half of the year, finished sixth in the league in all-purpose yards at 105.8 yards per game.
Moyer, who became the first offensive lineman to earn D3Football.com All-East Region honors in school history when he picked up third team honors in 2011, allowed just 2.5 sacks on the season en route to First Team All-MAC honors. A three-year starter, the 6-foot-1, 265-pounder helped the team average 8.7 more points, 5.2 more total yards and 30.9 more rushing yards per game than in 2010. Moyer was also the team's Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2009. Moyer was also named a D3Senior Classic Honorable Mention Preseason All-American.
Jayne, a two-time second-team all-conference pick, will continue to serve as the team's rock on the defensive line. He posted 28 tackles, five for loss and added 2.5 sacks. He also forced two fumbles and earned D3Football.com Team of the Week accolades after posting 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks against Westminster.
The team's shutdown cornerback, Talerico enjoyed a fine season on the outside for the Warriors in 2011, as the team allowed just 130.0 yards per game through the air. Talerico posted two interceptions, both against FDU-Florham, and added nine breakups to tie with teammate Ryan Fenningham for fourth in the league with 11 passes defended. The three-year starter finished seventh on the team with 31 tackles.
